For many people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, managing emotions can be a challenge. While everyone experiences strong feelings from time to time, many of our students feel emotions very deeply and intensely. That’s why emotional regulation is an important part of learning and growth at Pathways.

One of the most powerful ways students develop these skills is through community. By spending time with friends, participating in classes, and building relationships with teachers, students have opportunities to practice recognizing and expressing their emotions.

For Sydney, a simple set of handmade emotion cards has become a valuable tool. Each card features a different feeling, allowing her to communicate what she’s experiencing when words are difficult to find. When Sydney wants to share how she’s feeling with a teacher or friend, she show the card or cards that match her emotions.

These cards help Sydney advocate for herself, strengthen her relationships, and navigate her emotions with confidence. It’s a reminder that sometimes the simplest tools can make a meaningful difference.
