For Curtis, Pathways Opens the Way to Growth, Confidence, and Community

Since enrolling at Pathways in 2011, Curtis has gone from shy and uncertain to confident and thriving. Over the years, he’s grown in remarkable ways. He now enjoys reading aloud, has discovered a love for math—especially fractions and division—and cherishes connecting with friends who truly understand him.

“Being treated as the adult he is helps Curtis feel good about the program,” his mom, Deborah, shared. “He’s learned how to get along with others, set boundaries, and handle conflict with patience.” Because of Pathways, Curtis also became the first Board Member of the Down Syndrome Association of Tulsa with Down syndrome.

When Curtis became seriously ill in 2019, the John Hamby Scholarship Fund made it possible for him to continue attending Pathways, and still does to this day. For Deborah, a single mom managing medical care and daily living expenses on her own, the scholarship is essential. “Donors’ impact goes far beyond what they can imagine. They’re not just supporting a student. They are supporting a family and a community, “ she says.

This year, more students than ever are attending Pathways, which means the need for scholarships has never been greater.
