March is Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month (DDAM), a time to celebrate the talents, contributions, and experiences of individuals with developmental disabilities. While this month helps bring attention to the importance of accessibility, opportunity, and connection, it’s important to remember that these needs don’t disappear when the calendar turns to April. At Pathways Adult Learning Center, we provide support, education, and community for students all year long.
For students like Tammy, Pathways has become a place where she feels at home.
Tammy and her family recently moved from California to Tulsa, which meant leaving behind familiar faces and routines. Adjusting to a new place can be overwhelming, but Tammy’s bright spirit and love for people helped her find her way.
“I love making friends and coming to Pathways on Fridays,” Tammy shares with a smile. For her, Pathways is more than just a learning center—it’s a place of friendship, laughter, and belonging.
Beyond building friendships, Tammy has a love for music and art classes, which allow her to express herself in creative and meaningful ways. Whether she’s drawing, singing along to her favorite songs, or enjoying hands-on activities, these classes give her the opportunity to share her personality, emotions, and creativity with those around her.
DDAM is a time to recognize and celebrate individuals like Tammy and the countless others who bring joy, talent, and strength to our communities. It’s also a reminder that the need for education, resources, and meaningful opportunities doesn’t stop at the end of March.
At Pathways, we work every day to:
- Provide educational and life-skills programs that help students gain confidence and independence.
- Foster connections and friendships that enrich lives.
- Create a welcoming space where every student feels valued and supported.
How You Can Support Students Like Tammy
While March is an important time for awareness, true progress happens year-round. You can help make a difference by:
- Supporting Pathways – You can make a difference all year long by becoming a Way Maker with a monthly donation.
- Volunteering – Spend time mentoring or assisting in classes.
- Spreading Awareness – Share Tammy’s story and advocate for more opportunities for people with developmental disabilities.
Tammy’s journey is just one example of how support and connection can change lives. Let’s continue to celebrate and uplift individuals with developmental disabilities not just this month, but every day.
